More variety, more comfort, less energy consumption: the modernised Turmöl service station in Ried demonstrates what contemporary shop concepts look like today. The centrepiece of the new shop is the energy‑efficient refrigerated furniture from HAUSER.

ORLEN Austria operates more than 260 Turmöl service stations across seven federal states and is one of the largest petrol station operators in the country. The company employs more than 600 people. Many sites offer self‑service terminals enabling cashless payment around the clock. Sixty‑seven locations also function as local suppliers with SPAR express shops. In addition, Turmöl operates modern car washes as well as parcel services for Postpartner or Hermes. The new owner has committed to a modernisation strategy, which includes expanding EV charging stations. Service stations are being modernised step by step – such as the locations in Gmunden, Ried and Linzer Straße in Wels.

Complete refurbishment

The new concept not only includes a visual upgrade of the existing service stations, but also an entirely new shop layout and new refrigerated cabinets. Together with SPAR, a contemporary shop concept was developed, aimed at delivering a modern and inviting atmosphere. “The entire layout is based on a new colour scheme with plenty of glass, oak wood and black elements. This creates an airy yet modern appearance,” explains Benjamin Salhofer, Project Manager at ORLEN Austria. When selecting a refrigeration furniture supplier, the main focus was on implementing the shop concept in the best possible way. “It was also essential to work with a partner capable of flexibly meeting our requirements and ensuring regional maintenance and servicing,” says Salhofer. ORLEN Austria therefore chose the Austrian refrigeration and cooling specialist HAUSER, which equipped the Ried branch with highly efficient and stylishly designed refrigerated furniture.

Renovation under time pressure

As part of the modernisation, the old Turmöl shop in Ried was completely gutted and rebuilt. “Only the floor slab and walls remained,” Salhofer reports. All construction elements and fittings were delivered according to the just‑in‑time principle. A challenge was the limited space for deliveries and the need for close coordination in advance to keep the renovation phase as short as possible and stay on schedule. During the refurbishment, the façade was opened up and replaced with large glass surfaces; furniture with wood panels and black décor was installed; bright flooring was laid; and cosy seating areas for quick snacks were created. “Cooperation with HAUSER worked smoothly and punctually from planning through coordination to the installation of the refrigerated units and the cold room. The supplier was also very flexible in meeting our requests,” says the project manager. After just around ten weeks, the modernised branch was able to reopen.

Cool design, high transparency

The refurbished Turmöl service station stands out with its open and bright appearance. “The shop, bathed in light and generously designed, is an absolute highlight – and our customers confirm this,” says Salhofer. A key element of the shop concept is the energy‑saving and highly transparent refrigerated furniture – such as the walk‑in cooler, whose large glass doors offer an optimal view of the beverage range. The refrigerated shelf can be conveniently restocked from the cooling room behind it, where pre‑chilled beverages are stored. “This is extremely practical, saves time and simplifies handling,” says Salhofer. For dairy products, a HAUSER Remeta wall‑mounted refrigerated shelf with energy‑saving glass doors is used. Seamlessly connected in modular design is a two‑door Mirengo freezer, presenting the compact frozen goods assortment. At the centrally positioned Vinia refrigerated island from the HAUSER manufactory, convenience products such as fresh snacks, filled rolls and chilled drinks await customers. “The refrigerated units fit perfectly into the shop concept and place our diverse product range in the spotlight,” emphasises Salhofer.

Optimal product presentation with reduced energy consumption

Besides visually enhancing the shop’s offering, the new refrigerated furniture and cold room significantly reduce energy consumption thanks to state‑of‑the‑art technology. “Compared to before, we save considerable operating costs for cooling. At the same time, the large refrigerated shelves and island beautifully showcase our range of goods,” says Salhofer. The walk‑in cooler also proves its worth thanks to its simple and convenient handling: staff can quickly restock all beverages directly from the cooling room. Empty bottles can also be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way: at all 67 Turmöl stations with Spar express, practical reverse vending machines for PET bottles and cans are available – enabling returns around the clock. “This initiative underlines our sustainability strategy, which also focuses on electromobility and supporting the energy transition,” says Salhofer. Turmöl customers can now not only refuel, charge and wash at affordable prices, but also choose from a wide range of fresh snacks, groceries and chilled drinks.
