The newly built Transgourmet cash & carry market in Wals-Siezenheim opened this spring, impressing customers with its modern design and extensive product range at competitive prices. A particular highlight is the transparent refrigerated display equipment from HAUSER, which not only showcases products perfectly but also helps save energy.

As a full-service specialist for the wholesale sector, Transgourmet offers a comprehensive range of products for the hospitality and hotel industries. Highlights of the new market in Wals-Siezenheim include more than 21,000 food and non-food items, 5,000 square meters of clearly organized sales space, and 100 new parking spaces. Regional and international specialties, a walk-in humidor, a cooking studio, a marketplace with fresh products, and a bistro offering refreshments and snacks create a unique shopping experience. “Our location in Wals-Siezenheim is the largest and most modern Transgourmet cash & carry market in Austria. Here, we offer not only culinary specialties but also freshly prepared meals at our marketplace,” says Uwe Frosch, Construction Project Manager and Buyer NHW at Transgourmet.

Extensive Investment

Transgourmet Wals-Siezenheim has been operating a wholesale market for the hospitality industry since 1988. The site was expanded in 2001 but eventually reached its capacity limits. “That is why we decided to build a new market next to the existing facility and convert the former building into a logistics center,” explains Frosch. With a total investment of €50 million, the first phase involved constructing the new cash & carry market on 12,000 square meters of newly acquired land. The market opened in April 2024. By 2025, the logistics center, featuring 34 loading bays for inbound and outbound deliveries as well as storage and refrigerated areas covering 13,000 square meters, is scheduled for completion.

Modern & Well Structured

The concept of the new market provides customers with an ideal overview of the extensive product range. Regional and international meat and fish specialties, island solutions for chilled products, a separate fruit and vegetable section, and a cooking studio where Michelin-starred chefs advise customers and present new products make shopping an enjoyable experience. A snack bar provides refreshments. The interior design of the market features subtle dark grey furnishings complemented by oak-colored wood elements, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A key component of the modern design is the transparent, energy-efficient refrigeration equipment supplied by Austrian refrigeration specialist HAUSER. “We had already equipped our market in Zell am See with HAUSER refrigeration technology. For the new build in Wals-Siezenheim, the supplier once again impressed us with the best value for money,” says Frosch.

Step-by-Step Modernization

During ongoing market operations, the existing twelve refrigeration systems for chilled and frozen goods were gradually replaced by two new HAUSER CO₂ booster refrigeration systems. At the same time, HAUSER installed the new refrigerated furniture, including 160 linear meters of Remeta refrigerated shelves with glass swing doors, 76 linear meters of Meranis freezer and chilled islands with sliding glass lids, and 6 linear meters of Mirengo upright freezers. “The new refrigerated furniture integrates perfectly into the market’s modern design. From a technical perspective, a fully glazed, closed design was important to us because it enables optimal product presentation while also being particularly energy-efficient. HAUSER’s solutions meet our high standards and showcase the products in the best possible way,” says Frosch.

Maximum Transparency for Customers and Employees

With their transparent design and wood-metal décor, the new refrigerated units fit perfectly into the overall appearance of the market. The Meranis freezer islands feature large panoramic glazing and a low overall height, ensuring excellent visibility of the extensive frozen food assortment. The Remeta wall-mounted refrigerated shelves combine a clear, premium design with transparent glass doors to deliver outstanding product visibility and energy efficiency. Thanks to innovative technology, the shelves consume up to 20 percent less energy than the previous model. The fully glazed Mirengo freezer also stands out with maximum transparency, excellent product presentation, and high space productivity. Its energy-saving glass doors, optimized airflow, and efficient fans contribute to excellent energy performance and cost-effectiveness. “The high level of transparency of the refrigerated furniture is appreciated not only by our customers but also helps staff keep an eye on stock levels,” says Frosch.

Energy-Efficient Refrigeration Technology

Cooling for the refrigerated furniture is provided by two booster refrigeration systems using environmentally friendly CO₂ as the refrigerant. The systems are designed with redundancy to ensure maximum operational reliability. A major advantage is that the waste heat generated by the refrigeration units is recovered and used to heat the market and provide hot water. “Together with the photovoltaic systems that we are installing on all suitable roof areas, we can significantly reduce our overall energy demand,” says Frosch. In addition to the efficient use of resources and energy, Transgourmet focuses on packaging optimization, waste prevention, recycling, and sustainable business practices. The company is also certified according to ISO and TÜV environmental standards. “The new refrigeration technology definitely makes an important contribution to our sustainability concept,” concludes the project manager.
